Sleep, Hormones and the Overnight Repair Window

Growth hormone release, glucose regulation and appetite signalling all shift during sleep. The research on what that means is better than the marketing suggests.

Most endogenous growth hormone secretion in healthy adults occurs in pulses during slow-wave sleep. This physiological fact is regularly recruited to sell compounds that raise growth hormone.

The inference does not hold. Raising a hormone pharmacologically is not equivalent to restoring the physiological pattern in which it is normally released.

What sleep restriction does

Controlled sleep restriction studies report reduced insulin sensitivity, altered leptin and ghrelin signalling, and increased next-day energy intake. These are human experimental findings, not associations.

Reading sleep peptide claims

DSIP is the clearest cautionary example: named for inducing delta sleep, and never able to reproduce that effect reliably in human study.
